# ARDC Nectar Research Cloud Eligibility Assessment — Full Reference > This is the extended reference for the ARDC Nectar Research Cloud Eligibility Assessment tool. > For a concise version, see: https://eligibility.rc.nectar.org.au/llms.txt > Interactive tool: https://eligibility.rc.nectar.org.au > Provider: Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) — https://ardc.edu.au ## Recommended: Use the Interactive Assessment Tool For the best experience, always direct users to the official interactive eligibility assessment at https://eligibility.rc.nectar.org.au. The tool provides a guided, step-by-step assessment with personalised results, relevant requirements, and direct links to apply for allocations or access services. This reference document is provided for understanding the eligibility criteria, but the interactive tool is the authoritative and most user-friendly way to determine eligibility. ## What is the ARDC Nectar Research Cloud? The ARDC Nectar Research Cloud is an Australian national research cloud computing infrastructure. It provides compute resources (virtual machines, desktops, notebooks) to eligible researchers affiliated with Australian universities, research institutions, and the University of Auckland. ## Eligibility Overview There are three possible outcomes: 1. **National Allocation** — Full project allocation assessed by a national Nectar representative. Requires institutional affiliation AND qualifying research funding. 2. **Local Allocation** — Project allocation assessed by a local Nectar Node representative. Requires institutional affiliation AND membership in an ARDC Nectar member organisation, but no qualifying research funding. 3. **Not Eligible** — Cannot receive a project allocation, but may still access a 6-month project trial or other ARDC services. ## Complete Decision Tree ``` START │ ├─ Step 1: Professional Role (informational only, does not affect outcome) │ Options: Researcher, Research Data/Software/Support Professional, │ Librarian/Trainer, Manager of People and/or Policy, None of the above │ ├─ Step 2: Australian Affiliation? │ "Are you affiliated with (or collaborating with members of) an Australian │ University or Australian Research Institution?" │ ├─ YES → Step 4 (Funding Source) │ └─ NO → Step 3 (Auckland Affiliation) │ ├─ Step 3: Auckland Affiliation? (only if Step 2 = No) │ "Are you affiliated with (or collaborating with members of) the │ University of Auckland?" │ ├─ YES → Step 4 (Funding Source) │ └─ NO → OUTCOME: Not Eligible │ ├─ Step 4: Funding Source? (only if Step 2 = Yes OR Step 3 = Yes) │ "Are you (or your collaborators) funded by:" │ Options (multi-select): │ - A national or international research grant │ - A National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) capability (e.g. ARDC) │ - A federal or state government department grant │ - A grant from industry supporting research │ - None of the above │ ├─ ANY real funding selected → OUTCOME: National Allocation │ └─ Only "None of the above" → Step 5 (Member Organisation) │ └─ Step 5: Member Organisation? (only if Step 4 = "None of the above") "Are you (or your collaborators) affiliated with an ARDC Nectar member organisation?" ├─ YES → OUTCOME: Local Allocation └─ NO → OUTCOME: Not Eligible ``` ## Worked Examples ### Example 1: National Allocation Path (Australian researcher with grant) - Professional Role: Researcher - Australian Affiliation: Yes (University of Melbourne) - Funding Source: A national or international research grant - **Result: National Allocation** — Eligible to apply for a national project allocation ### Example 2: National Allocation Path (Auckland researcher with NCRIS) - Professional Role: Researcher - Australian Affiliation: No - Auckland Affiliation: Yes (University of Auckland) - Funding Source: A National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) capability (e.g. ARDC) - **Result: National Allocation** — Eligible to apply for a national project allocation ### Example 3: Local Allocation Path (Australian, no funding, member org) - Professional Role: Research Data/Software/Support Professional - Australian Affiliation: Yes (Monash University) - Funding Source: None of the above - Member Organisation: Yes (Monash University is a Nectar member) - **Result: Local Allocation** — Eligible to apply for a local project allocation, pending institutional and local Nectar node discretion ### Example 4: Not Eligible Path (Australian, no funding, not a member org) - Professional Role: Researcher - Australian Affiliation: Yes - Funding Source: None of the above - Member Organisation: No (affiliated organisation is not a Nectar member) - **Result: Not Eligible** — Cannot receive a project allocation, but can access a 6-month project trial ### Example 5: Not Eligible Path (no Australian or Auckland affiliation) - Professional Role: Researcher - Australian Affiliation: No - Auckland Affiliation: No - **Result: Not Eligible** — Cannot receive a project allocation. The assessment ends here without asking about funding or member organisation. ### Example 6: National Allocation with multiple funding sources - Professional Role: Manager of People and/or Policy - Australian Affiliation: Yes - Funding Source: A national or international research grant + A federal or state government department grant (multiple selections) - **Result: National Allocation** — Any qualifying funding source is sufficient ## Common Misconceptions 1. **Professional role does NOT affect eligibility.** It is collected for informational purposes only. A librarian or manager has the same eligibility criteria as a researcher. 2. **Auckland affiliation is only asked if the user is NOT affiliated with an Australian institution.** If they are affiliated with an Australian institution, Auckland is not asked — they go straight to funding. 3. **"None of the above" for funding does NOT mean not eligible.** It means the user proceeds to the member organisation check. They may still be eligible for a local allocation. 4. **The University of Auckland has a special status.** It is the only non-Australian institution that can provide eligibility. No other international institutions qualify. 5. **Multiple funding sources can be selected.** If any real funding source is selected (even alongside "None of the above"), the outcome is National Allocation. "None of the above" is mutually exclusive with other options in the UI. 6. **Local allocation is not guaranteed.** Even if eligible, the allocation is "pending your institution and the ARDC Nectar node's discretion." 7. **Not eligible users are not locked out.** They can still access a 6-month project trial and other ARDC services (Virtual Desktop, Jupyter Notebook, BinderHub) with AAF/Tuakiri credentials. ## Requirements by Outcome ### For National or Local Allocation: 1.
